The story
The Safari Rally ran on open roads across Kenya: thousands of kilometres of dust, mud and rough tracks, often flat out between towns. It was the rally that broke cars, and Datsun built theirs to survive it. From 1979 to 1982 Shekhar Mehta won it four times running for Datsun, the last two in the Violet GT. At the 30th Safari in 1982 he started as the defending winner, with number 1 on the doors.
